What are syphilis tests?
Syphilis tests are used to screen for and diagnose syphilis. Syphilis is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It is a bacterial infection that spreads through vaginal, oral, or anal sexual contact with someone who has the infection. It can also pass during pregnancy to the fetus.
Syphilis usually develops in stages. Each stage has different signs and symptoms that can last for weeks, months, or even years. In the beginning, the signs and symptoms may be mild. You may not notice them. So, you could have syphilis and not know it. You could pass the infection to someone else.
Syphilis is easiest to cure in the early stages of infection. If it's not treated and develops to a late stage, it can cause permanent damage to your health. Treatment can still help, but it will not reverse the damage. In rare cases, untreated syphilis can even cause death.
Syphilis tests can help diagnose the infection in the early stages, when it's easiest to cure. Finding and treating the infection early can also prevent the spread of syphilis to others.
Other names: Rapid plasma reagin (RPR), Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL), fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) test, agglutination assay (TP-PA), darkfield microscopy.

Rapid tests (finger-prick blood, results in 10-15 minutes)
Lab-based tests (venipuncture, detects early/latent stages)
At-home collection kits (mail-in samples for lab analysis)
①Early Detection – Identifies infections as early as 1-2 weeks post-exposure (via PCR) or 3-6 weeks (antibody tests).

Simple Syphilis Testing – Step-by-Step Guide
Getting tested for syphilis is quick, easy, and confidential. Follow these steps whether you choose a rapid test, lab test, or at-home kit:
1. Choose Your Test Method
Rapid Test (Finger-Prick Blood) – Results in 10-15 minutes (clinics/outreach programs).
Lab Test (Blood Draw) – Most accurate, detects all stages (results in 1-3 days).
At-Home Collection Kit – Mail your sample to a lab (results online in 2-5 days).
2. Prepare for Testing
For rapid tests: Avoid lotions/oils on fingers before finger-prick.
For lab tests: No fasting needed; stay hydrated.
For at-home kits: Read instructions carefully before starting.
3. Sample Collection
Rapid Test (Clinics/Home Kits)
① Clean your fingertip with alcohol.
② Use the lancet to prick your finger.
③ Collect a blood drop on the test strip.
④ Add buffer solution & wait 10-15 minutes.
Lab Test (Clinic/Hospital)
① A nurse draws blood from your arm.
② Sample is sent to a lab for analysis.
At-Home Mail-In Kit
① Collect blood/plasma via provided tubes.
② Seal the sample in the prepaid package.
③ Mail it to the lab the same day.
4. Read Results
Non-Reactive (Negative): No syphilis antibodies detected.
Reactive (Positive): Antibodies found → confirm with a lab test.
Invalid: Test error → retest needed.
5. Next Steps
Negative? Retest in 3-6 weeks if recent exposure.
Positive? Seek immediate treatment (penicillin cures syphilis!)
