Steps for Using a LH Test Ovulation Test

LH ovulation tests help predict ovulation by detecting the surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) that occurs 24-48 hours before ovulation. Follow these steps for accurate results:

1. Determine the Right Time to Test

For most women, the best time to test is between 10 AM and 8 PM.

Start testing a few days before your expected ovulation (typically Day 10-12 of a 28-day cycle).

If your cycle is irregular, track your cycle length and adjust accordingly.

2. Prepare the Test

Wash your hands before handling the test.

Check the expiration date and ensure the package is sealed.

Open the test strip or midstream device just before use.

3. Collect Urine Sample

For test strips: Collect urine in a clean, dry cup.

For midstream tests: Hold the absorbent tip directly in your urine stream for 5-7 seconds.

Avoid first-morning urine, as LH surges are often better detected later in the day.

4. Perform the Test

Dip strip tests: Place the strip in urine for 5-10 seconds, then lay it flat.

Midstream tests: Hold the test downward or lay it flat after sampling.

Wait for the recommended time (usually 5 minutes) before reading results.

5. Interpret the Results

Positive (LH Surge Detected): The test line is as dark as or darker than the control line. Ovulation will likely occur within 24-48 hours.

Negative: The test line is lighter than the control (no LH surge yet). Continue daily testing.

Invalid: No control line appears—repeat the test with a new kit.

6. Plan Accordingly

If positive, the next 1-2 days are the most fertile for conception.

Track multiple cycles for better prediction if needed.
